This one-day course shows how to design bus interchanges and associated infrastructure avoiding the most common mistakes that recur in modern designs. These common mistakes may be minor, but frequently manifest themselves at critical times during construction or operation, resulting in challenging and costly remedial work during the final phases of the project.

 

Many of these design issues occur because the designers or those approving the design may lack specialist knowledge of the bus industry, including bus interchange requirements, vehicle manoeuvrability and transport operations.

 

The course includes practical examples of issues, video footage and case studies and explains how and why issues occur, how they frequently affect operations, and what mitigation is required.

 

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to recognise potential issues in bus infrastructure design, understand the implications of those issues, and propose practical alternatives.

  • Select a bus station layout that best suits a network, its services and headways.
  • Understand how good concourse design aids segregation of passengers and buses.

  • Understand what processes need to be completed and tested prior to opening and operational handover

Issues Workshop Delegates are shown 6 actual proposals that ably demonstrate the issues highlighted in the first module.
How Buses Move Shows typical static and dynamic specifications for common bus types, the road space needed and how manoeuvring buses use that road space.
Types of Interchange Shows the various types of Interchange layout, their advantages, disadvantages and how they aid or hinder operations
Interchange Design Features recovery time and layover time, design of layover areas, alighting points
Designing for Drivers Design of drivers facilities, procuring drivers facilities in remote locations
Designing for Passengers Passenger requirements, segregation from buses, concourse design, desire lines, railings, seating, security, architecture
