This one day course focuses on the issues bus operators and councils face when third party demolition or construction works disrupt and divert bus routes. When temporary bus stops, stands and layover areas need to be planned and implemented, it’s important to get it right to ensure that services, driver and passenger facilities remain safe, efficient and retain patronage.

 

Whether they’re rejuvenating the town centre, extending the Railway station or building a new bus interchange, long term road works often isolate a group of prime town centre stops from the network. Diversions and restricted access will require temporary bus stops, stands and facilities to be planned and implemented. This course shows delegates the issues they will face when planning temporary infrastructure, how to reduce the consequences of disruption and shows ways in which building contractors and bus operators can work together to keep services moving.

This includes developers and urban planners, architectural consultants, highway designers and engineers, transport planners, transport consultants or those involved in town centre rejuvenation projects. It is ideal for teams from local councils, district councils, transport authorities, transport consultancies, urban developers and bus operators.

Course Content

The course begins by examining typical scenarios and issues that require temporary infrastructure. Most issues of poor bus stop design occur due to designers being unfamiliar with how buses manoeuvre, and not fully understanding the needs of the bus operators, drivers and passengers. A further module examines these areas in detail covering the road-space that buses require, standard bus stop design, street width design, requirements for recovery time and layover, drivers facilities, passenger facilities, and phased project planning. Having covered the theoretical basics, the course examines methods and techniques of implementing temporary stops, stands and facilities including service interlacing at existing stops, requesting TROs to assist buses access streets that they cannot normally use, bus tests, road and pavement alterations, pavement width considerations for pedestrians, and requesting assistance from developers for roads space, logistical inter-working with deliveries etc, providing or sharing facilities

Course Objectives

On completion of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand how buses use road-space, operators’ and drivers’ needs for layover areas, recovery time, driver facilities and basic guidelines for bus stop dimensions
  • Understand who to approach regarding TROs or changes to Rights of Way
  • Understand how the council or developer can assist with creating new routes and providing driver facilities and layover space
  • Understand how phased construction may require changes to temporary infrastructure
  • Understand the importance of passenger information, updates, plans and facilities

How construction affects bus networks Explores the effects that various types of construction (road works and resurfacing, hoardings, road closures, demolition and construction, renovation or maintenance) can have on bus networks.
Basic guidelines for infrastructure Revision period briefly describing guidelines for bus stops, layover and recovery areas, concourses, road widths and bus roadspace
Creating new paths for your routes Explains methods of maintaining times, mileage and service reliability by creating new paths to reach bus bays, layovers etc.
Bus testing and street alterations The importance of bus testing and determining whether street furniture needs moving, roads and pavements altering, signage, pavement widths at stops and parking suspensions
Safety 1– segregating buses from works traffic. The types of works traffic – road workers, hoardings, construction traffic, demolition works and traffic, cranes, underground works and why segregation is required.
Safety 2 – segregating displaced passengers from buses Siting of temporary stops in relation to junctions, traffic flows, bus movements, pedestrian crossings, pavement widths, other traffic.
Agreements and Acts A guide to forming basic agreements between developer and bus operator, and the Acts that govern powers to alter road traffic conditions. Includes agreements for safety, noise, dust, working methods, working times, method statements, vehicle queuing, amendments to bus driver procedures, construction phases, costs.
