This one day course focuses on the issues bus operators and councils face when third party demolition or construction works disrupt and divert bus routes. When temporary bus stops, stands and layover areas need to be planned and implemented, it’s important to get it right to ensure that services, driver and passenger facilities remain safe, efficient and retain patronage.
Whether they’re rejuvenating the town centre, extending the Railway station or building a new bus interchange, long term road works often isolate a group of prime town centre stops from the network. Diversions and restricted access will require temporary bus stops, stands and facilities to be planned and implemented. This course shows delegates the issues they will face when planning temporary infrastructure, how to reduce the consequences of disruption and shows ways in which building contractors and bus operators can work together to keep services moving.

Who should attend
The course begins by examining typical scenarios and issues that require temporary infrastructure. Most issues of poor bus stop design occur due to designers being unfamiliar with how buses manoeuvre, and not fully understanding the needs of the bus operators, drivers and passengers. A further module examines these areas in detail covering the road-space that buses require, standard bus stop design, street width design, requirements for recovery time and layover, drivers facilities, passenger facilities, and phased project planning. Having covered the theoretical basics, the course examines methods and techniques of implementing temporary stops, stands and facilities including service interlacing at existing stops, requesting TROs to assist buses access streets that they cannot normally use, bus tests, road and pavement alterations, pavement width considerations for pedestrians, and requesting assistance from developers for roads space, logistical inter-working with deliveries etc, providing or sharing facilities
