This one-day course shows how to design bus stops and bus stands that allow operations to maintain time and efficiency.

 

Many bus stops contain design issues that are minor, but these issues frequently delay bus operations due to poor positioning and inconvenience for passenger loading. These increase journey times and deter passengers from using services regularly. These in turn increase operational costs which lead to services becoming uneconomic and ultimately being withdrawn.

 

Many of these design issues occur because the designers or those approving the design may lack specialist knowledge of the bus industry, including vehicle manoeuvrability, operational requirements and passenger requirements.

 

The course includes practical examples of issues, video footage and case studies and explains how and why issues occur, how they frequently affect operations, and what mitigation is required.

 

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to recognise potential issues in bus stop and bus stand design, understand the implications of those issues, and propose practical alternatives.

Course Objectives

The course combines theoretical concepts with practical examples of both good and bad bus stop designs, showing how dwell times, and thus journey times can be reduced by implementing low cost improvements.

 

On completion of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of dwell times, journey times, recovery time and layover
  • Understand the basics of the road-space buses require and how they use it
  • Understand the various types of bus stop and stand, their advantages and disadvantages and how each can aid or hinder operations
  • Understand the importance of how passenger numbers alter throughout the day and how the types of passenger need different types of service when boarding
  • Understand how and why a stop should allow a bus to enter and dock at high operating speeds
  • Understand the importance of bus stands, their use and their relationship to bus stops
  • Understand the standard guidances relating to layout configurations of various bus stops
  • Be aware of the limitations and working practices of such relationships, and the relationship regarding road width with bus separation distance
  • Be aware of the relationships and configurations of bus shelters and other street furniture in relation to the stop layout
  • Understand the relationship of bus stop positioning in relation to road junctions and other stops
