Course Overview
This one-day course highlights common mistakes that occur during the planning and design of bus interchanges and infrastructure. It explores issues that, may at first appear minor, but if not identified and addressed early can result in challenging and costly remedial work during the final phases of the project.
Many of these design issues occur because the designers or those approving the design may lack the specialist knowledge of bus interchange requirements, vehicle manoeuvrability and transport operations. Taught through practical examples video footage and case studies, the course provides an introduction to these areas of specialist knowledge and how and why they are essential parts of the design. By the end of the course, delegates will be able to recognise potential issues in bus infrastructure design, understand the implications of those issues, and propose practical alternatives.
Who should attend
This intermediate level course is ideal for anyone involved in the planning, development and delivery of bus interchanges, bus stops and associated bus infrastructure. This includes developers and urban planners, architectural consultants, highway designers and engineers, transport planners, transport consultants or those involved in town centre rejuvenation projects. It is ideal for teams from local councils, district councils, transport authorities, transport consultancies, urban developers and bus operators. All participants will be issued with a certificate of attendance and awarded 6 CPD hours.
Course Objectives
The course combines theoretical concepts with practical examples of both good and bad designs, showing how money can be saved at all stages of the design and construction process.
On completion of the course participants will be able to:
- Identify, mitigate against and challenge the common issues that affect good bus infrastructure design
- Gain insight into the road-space buses require and how they use it
- Appreciate good and bad bus stop design and the space required for buses and bus stops in street design
- Understand operators’ and drivers’ needs for layover areas, recovery time and driver facilities
- Understand various bus priority measures, their advantages and disadvantages, and principles of effective design;
- Select a bus station layout that best suits a network, its services and headways
- Understand how good concourse design aids segregation of passengers and buses
- Understand how safety audits integrate with the bus interchange project life cycle

Explains the common issues that occur, how and why they are introduced into designs and their effects on the completed facility. |
| Workshop 1 |
Delegates are shown 6 actual proposals that ably demonstrate the issues highlighted in the first module. |
| How Buses Move |
Shows typical static and dynamic specifications for common bus types, the road space needed and how manoeuvring buses use that road space. |
| Bus Stop Design |
Expands on the previous module to show how buses enter bus stops and how poor design causes inconvenience and delays |
| Bus Stop Design Workshop |
Delegates consider and critique various bus stop designs in relation to passenger requirements. Includes video footage ‘from the bus cab’ |
| Designing for Streets |
Explores the minimum width of a road required to allow two buses to pass without slowing on the straight, with bus stops and on bends. |
| Bus Priority methods – Guest speaker |
Why bus priority is required in today’s traffic. Common methods of implementing Bus priority technology, example of street improvement |
| Designing for Drivers |
Types of bus interchange, recovery time and layover time, design of layover areas, alighting points, design of drivers facilities, procuring drivers facilities in remote locations |

Passenger requirements, segregation from buses, concourse design, desire lines, railings, seating, security, architecture |
| Small Interchange Design workshop |
Delegates revisit designs in Workshop 1, but now critique good and bad aspects of the design. |
